John Eley- A self-taught artist who emigrated from England, coming to Oregon in 2003. Artistic talents include working with wood, stained glass, glass etching, metal sculpture, oil Before John discovered this artistic talent, life was entirely different. In 1962, just three days before he was to become a professional boxer (and ten days before he was to be married), he lost the four fingers of his right hand in a metal press accident. He spent two years recovering from the accident. Having trouble breaking through the emotional blocks that were preventing him from moving what little remained of John's right-hand fingers, his doctor gave him a small box of paints to help him exercise the fingers. That gesture of therapy was the beginning of a lifetime of artistic expression that John previously did not know was in him. He has never looked back, and constantly looks for new ways to learn and to test his artistic talents. |

Maggie Eley - Working with both adolescents and adults, Maggie Eley has been a psychiatric nurse for the more than 24 years. A firm believer in a holistic approach to health care, Maggie has used her creativity to work with both patients and staff. When John began making his beautiful handcrafted flutes, Maggie incorporated those into her work with patients, achieving wonderful results. Both Maggie and her patients look forward to her playing several times per week on her work unit. Maggie also enjoys playing at hospital-sponsored diversity events. For most of her adult life, Maggie has expressed herself through her arts and crafts. When designing a project, Maggie prefers to think outside the proverbial box. Jewelry design is her first artistic love, allowing the spirit to take her creativity where it may. Maggie especially enjoys working with "found" objects and is always hunting for that unique piece that will inspire her. She incorporates these pieces with many other enhancing materials such as glass beads, silver, gold, and polymer clay. All pieces are one-of-a-kind. She also enjoys photography which allows her to be an observer of life, giving her a new perspective from which to live and work. Since Maggie enjoys creating with various mediums, new projects are always in the works. And, each uniquely designed piece is created with love. |
